This activity by IUCN Regional Biodiversity Programme, Asia is in continuation of the Programme’s support in the region to help countries and stakeholders develop capacities on issues of biosafety for better implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, an international Protocol agreed under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

Regional Conference on the Agenda for WTO Hong Kong Ministerial ..
Are trade, trade liberalisation linked to development and growth? Can Hong Kong WTO Ministerial Meeting provide leads to take forward the interests of developing countries? Will the 6th WTO Ministerial Meeting be the provider of life-line for Doha Agenda? These are some of the questions some 80 participants asked amongst themselves within South Asia Region at the Pre-WTO Session of Global Biodiversity Forum (GBF) held in New Delhi, India during August 11-12, 2005.
This GBF being organised by RIS India, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) in partnership with national and regional organisation in South Asia is seen as a key forum to provide a strategic platform for WTO Ministerial in light of failure of the July Approximation discussions. Seen as a true key forum – perhaps the first in the region on linking environment, biodiversity and trade – this GBF will provide feedback to not only to the WTO Ministerial Meeting in Hong Kong but also to the South Asia meeting in Pakistan in October, the MDG + 5 review meeting, the multilateral environment agreement negotiations including the CBD COP 8 and UNFCCC COP 11 and Kyoto COP – MOP – 1.
